Get answers to commonly asked questions about Lune, carbon offsetting and more.
What is carbon offsetting?
The act of compensating for carbon emissions by financing projects that make equivalent reductions of carbon emissions. Projects include e.g., reforestation or wind energy.
What is carbon removal?
The act of physically removing carbon from the atmosphere. Forests do this naturally but it can also be achieved by technological solutions, such as direct air capture. Can be a subset of carbon offsetting and can be used to reach net zero emissions.
Why is carbon offsetting and carbon removal needed?
Firstly, we want to note that the top priority should be emissions reduction. To complement any emissions reduction efforts, carbon offsetting can be used to become carbon neutral. It is great because: 1. Sustainable businesses grow faster as well as attract and retain talent better. 2. The planet needs it. We have put over 1 trillion tonnes of excess CO2 in the atmosphere - we need to remove it.
What makes a high-quality carbon offset?
A project that can be trusted and shows high level of permanence, additionality and quantifiable emissions reductions or carbon removal. The projects are either verified by an independent third party (such as Gold Standard or Verra), have gone through some other rigorous third party assessment and/or use technology to improve confidence in the quality. These projects often (but not always) come at a premium price, because confidence in the project having a real world impact is higher.
How does Lune select which projects to offer to customers?
Our focus is to offer a diverse range of projects that will enable our customers to efficiently reach their sustainability goals. We assess a large number of projects and consult experts to ensure the projects we work with are high quality. 1. Diverse project types: ranging from traditional offset projects (e.g., reforestation, forest conservation, renewable energy) to innovative projects (e.g., direct air capture, biochar). 2. Geographic coverage: our customers can often support projects close to your operations. 3. Flexible price range: we want our customers to be able to build a portfolio of projects at different price points, so you can balance your overall cost to reach your sustainability goals within budget.
What is Carbon Neutrality and how is it different from Net Zero?
"Carbon neutral" is when someone is carbon offsetting an amount equivalent to their carbon footprint. "Net zero emissions" on the other hand is when someone is removing an amount of CO2 equivalent to their carbon footprint. Can only be achieved by "carbon removal" (e.g. reforestation, direct air capture) not by "emissions avoidance" (e.g. renewable energy offsets).
How can I buy carbon offsets through Lune?
There are two ways to buy carbon offsets through Lune: 1. Build automated carbon offsetting into your service using our software and API. 2. Manually purchase offsets through our intuitive dashboard. Our customers get access to both on signup.
How much does Lune cost?
The Lune platform is completely free to access. Lune charges a small fee based on how much you are offsetting through the platform. We strive to have the most cost-competitive offering in the market and are transparent about the fees we charge.
